Bishop Justus CoE School

School Meals

Catering at Bishop Justus School is delivered by an in house service, which enables us to prepare quality fresh food on-site by our own staff whilst tailoring menus to the preferences of our students.

We are very proud of our catering team and the quality food they provide for the school community. If you would like further details about menus, please ask Mrs. Murphy or one of the catering team.

Nut free zone

Reminder that our school endeavours, as far as possible, to be a nut-free school We have quite a number of students in school who have severe nut allergies and can be seriously affected by someone else who is eating – or may have recently eaten – nuts. Even if you eat a product containing nuts, this can have a serious effect on a student later on in the classroom. Disclaimer: Although we strive to be a nut-free school, it is impossible to provide an absolute guarantee that no nuts will be brought onto the premises.

Free School Meals

For Students:

If you are entitled to a Free School Meal, then here is what you will get at Bishop Justus:·

  • A breakfast to help set you up for the day -toast, cereal and a drink (tea, squash and sometimes hot chocolate as a treat!) Just go for Breakfast at the Bistro between 8:00am and 8:20am and ask for the breakfast deal- no need to add any money to your card.
  • A main meal- one of our freshly cooked nutritious meals (and items from the salad bar), or if you are getting a good meal at home, you can get a sandwich and a piece of fruit, dried fruit or seed bag instead.
  • Items selected at breaktime will be chargeable.

We are very proud of our catering team and the quality food they provide for the school community. If you would like further details about menus, please ask Mrs. Murphy or one of the catering team.

For Parents & Carers:

The government provides funding for a Free School Meal- a school lunch. But we want to do more so we also will provide a free breakfast for your child.

Your child might be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

If your child is eligible for free school meals, they'll remain eligible until they finish the phase of schooling (primary or secondary) they're in on 31st March 2022. You only need to register once at the school, but you do not need to if your child was in receipt of free school meals on 1 April 2018.

Children who get paid these benefits directly, instead of through a parent or guardian, can also get free school meals. (source: https://www.gov.uk/apply-free-school-meals/bromley)

We would encourage you to apply for a FSM, even if you do not wish to use it, as it also affects the future funding we receive.  An important part of the funding the school gets will be based on the number of our students entitled to free school meals. Each year you will need to reapply for FSM and we will of course send you a reminder if you forget.
